The Internet Is Dead - Long Live Local Search

This may sound unbelievable to you but the internet is dying... at least on a localized user level.
How can I say this? Well, there are many reasons to fuel the constant change in life online. Today social networks are taking on a very large part of searching online. People are moving in the direction of social media to get the information they are looking for. Social networks provide honest feedback from other users about products and services and allow for making better decisions.
But I digress... why have I said the internet is dead? Well, of course it is just a catchy title, but the fact is that the internet as we have known it for the past decade is no longer the network that we all grew to love so quickly back in the early days. Today it is a great source of information, and a global business reference and source, but there is something new happening on the search engines. They are trying to combat the social networks takeover of search and have provided their own way to find information and opinions on a local level. All of this activity has coined a new phrase. Local Search.
All the major engines today have a special page offered to all businesses. Google has gone ahead and actually created a listing for all businesses that they have found in their own database. It is literally every business that exists. The provided page for each business is called a Place Page and you can claim it, edit it, and have your business show up in any local search that encompasses your market share. Each search engine recognizes the importance of this shift is user activity and has taken steps to keep themselves involved in the future of search online. All you need to do is take over your pages and provide more information, even photos and videos, to really provide a free online advertisement of your business that is available to anyone who does a search for your service or product. This is incredible!
So, no, the internet is not dead, but search is changing and it has changed so much that the internet as we knew it really is deflated. People today look online for everything. It's easier, quicker and the results are better. Think of how the results for a search like pizza Memphis may include not only a list of pizza establishments in Memphis, but also offer people's opinions of the restaurants. You can select the restaurant that has the most positive reviews and you'll probably be happier with that pizza than if you just made a random choice. How does this compare to the big book of the old days? Remember that? What did you find in there? You found a list of pizza restaurants that contained the name, address and phone number. Some of them might of spent big bucks to place an actual advertisement on the page, but it still didn't provide any real life information.
However you want to see this inherent change in our lives, people are using their laptops, their cell phones and other mobile devices to search for everything they do in their daily lives. If you want to keep your business alive and moving forward into the future you owe it to your business to get it listed and active in your local market.
