Picking the Right Website Niche

Internet marketing is all the rage these days. There are a number of ways to make a good income on the side online and people are quick to try and jump on the bandwagon. While I applaud the enthusiasm, I often question the commitment of those 'casual internet marketers' that believe they can quickly and easily make a buck online. Although the internet is a mechanism that provides a bit more of a level playing field as compared to traditional businesses, the concepts that hold true when it comes to business in the traditional sense also hold true for online ventures.
Many of the new start up businesses that thrive online do so because they have found a niche for themselves. They have found an unserved or underserved market segment and found a way to serve them. Perhaps they're the first in their chosen space or have found a new and innovative solution for that space. Whatever the case, knowing your own strengths and defining this niche is the first step to being successful. When it comes to building online ventures such as websites that will make money via affiliate programs or advertising revenue, once again you must find your niche - an area you are knowledgeable about or have some expertise in.
So let's say you know what your own strengths are and you feel that you have a unique perspective or fresh new ideas to bring to the table. You feel this value will be of great benefit and use to your visitors, do you go ahead and start building your website? Actually, the answer to that question is No. You need to see what other fish are in the pond, so to speak. There are a great number of other questions you must be able to answer before you go down this road. Who are your competitors? What are their own strengths and weaknesses? Is there somebody out there providing the same information or service that you plan to provide it? Are they a trusted name in this marketplace? Do they have more impressive credentials than you do? Would you be able to convince your readers of your own authority on the subject? If you are not able to provide answers to these questions to at least your own satisfaction, then you know that you have some more thinking and work to do before you can begin.
